Making the Most of Your Headshots Session
Thanks for booking a headshot session with RJTmedia! Here are a few tips to help you get the best results from your shoot.
Clothing
A simple, plain shirt, polo or T-shirt is advisable, or a plain sweater over a T-shirt if it’s a bit chilly. No logos or designs should be visible, and I’d advise against hoods and details like epaulettes. Since the subject of a headshot is your face, any distractions from this are best kept to a minimum.
Hairspray
If you have long or medium length hair, for outdoor shoots I recommend using a little hairspray. The wind is our enemy, and even a light breeze can make hair misbehave, and this will show up in your shots.
Jewellery
None at all is best, but if you do want to wear jewellery the smaller and more subtle, the better.
Make-up
Once again, this is best kept clean and simple. Heavy eye make-up or overblown blusher will leave a casting director wondering what you really look like under there. Any spots or bags can be edited out later, so don’t feel you have to go crazy with the concealer if you wake up on the morning of the shoot with a zit on the end of your nose.
Shave
Gents, unless stubble is part of your desired look, have a shave before you arrive. The camera misses nothing.
Timing
Try to arrive with some time to spare. If we’re pushed for time, you’re likely to look flustered and this will be apparent in your shots. Arrive nice and early and you’ll be in a much more relaxed frame of mind.
Rain…?
Don’t worry if it looks a bit gloomy outside - all the outdoor locations I use have some sort of cover. (Besides, an overcast sky acts like a gigantic softbox, which is great for headshots!) It’d be best to bring an umbrella though, just in case you get caught in a shower on the way. We can’t have you looking as if you drove through a car wash in a convertible when you arrive.
But, if it really is coming down in buckets, then I’ll call you first thing to either confirm or reschedule the session.
Can I Bring a Friend?
Sure! But don’t forget that you’re going to be having your picture taken, so make sure it’s someone who you won’t feel embarrassed having around during the session. (Photoshoots are generally not ideal for a first date.)
